In this episode, we will discuss about the methods to secure our accounts and protect our data.
We all may have different accounts like Social Media, Email, etc. And while accessing it prompts us for a user-id/username or password in order to prove our identity to access our account once the username and password match it generates an access token to access the account and the token is valid until we sign out.
We will see the various methods that help us to protect our accounts below
Password:
In order to make our account more secure we should use a unique password with a minimum length of 12 characters inclusive of various special characters and use different passwords for different accounts because if any 1 of our accounts is compromised we could secure the other accounts
2FA/MFA Authentications:
This is the new and secure method introduced by various service providers to secure our accounts with 2nd layer of protection. It generates an OTP or code once we try to log in to our account
For using this we should have a sim or authenticator app to receive the code. 2FA sends an sms containing the code generated by the application or account that we try to access. MFA gives us various options to generate code such as Authenticator, Biometric etc. This helps us in improving security even when the password is known to others.
User-ID/Username:
We can use a unique user-id or username and different usernames or IDs for each account to avoid easy guessing of the ID.
Recommendations:
- Periodic changing of passwords (once a month)
- Check the device and activity of the account
- Enable Security alerts and notifications
- Don’t save your credentials
- Backup data to the cloud
Tips:
If you cont remember the password or couldn’t create a unique password you can use a 3rd party apps like Microsoft Authenticator & Auto-fill, Samsung Auto-fill, Google Autofill & Authenticator, One password, etc.
